The Importance of Girls

Writer's picture: Hannah DavisHannah Davis

I started and finished the show Girls which is an HBO exclusive. I have an insanely short attention span and find it difficult to pay attention to tv shows. However, I love Girls more than anything I have ever watched in my life. Finding this show in my early 20s is a blessing. Some people may hate that I kind of identify with the one and only, Hannah Horvath. Then again maybe we all thought it was totally chill to cut off all our hair during a mental crisis.

I find it comforting to watch a group of girls who are in my age range still finding it complicated to navigate life. Feeling overwhelmed with not always getting a dream satisfied. The dream constantly shifting. Everything not being as perfect as we envisioned as little girls. Making terrible and questionable decisions. What a relief to watch them be incredibly self-absorbed, scared, impulsive, repulsive, best friends, and fun.

The rollercoaster of thinking this character or characters is going to get what they want, and they don't is why it's so real. It's very relatable and the writer (Lena Dunham) based the characters and experiences off real people. Side note - Yes I know she’s not the best person ever.

Marnie being the mother/very tone-deaf, Jessa who is mystical yet tragic, Shoshanna the mostly positive bubbly one, and Hannah... insufferable but hilarious. These are adventurous women.

Something from the show that stuck with me is when Hannah's dad, Tad, expresses to Loreen (her mom) how concerned he is about Hannah. He worries that she doesn't know how to do anything in the real world. Loreen tells him, "She knows how to have fun." Oh, to be unapologetic.
